Rangers 'scored' a 2nd goal in the original game which was disallowed. They protested against the decision on the basis that the ball had croseed the line, but had hit a spectator and rebounded into play.

On the evening of Monday 19th April, the SFA Committee dismissed the appeal and ordered for the replay to played on 26th April.

Rangers refused to turn up to play the replayed match. Vale of Leven and the officials did turn up to play the match and took to the pitch at the appointed time. The referee therefore awarded the match and the Cup to Vale of Leven. That decision needed to be ratified by the SFA, which they duly did a few days later. The entry for the season on the Cup itself states "Vale of Leven, Rangers did not appear".

25 March 18827th finalQueen's Park - Vale of Leven6th final
First Cathkin Park, Glasgow

The match was never played due to Vale of Leven not appearing. This was in protest that a request made on the Wednesday before the match was due to take place for a postponement due to bereavement, illness and injury had been refused by the Scottish FA.

The awarding of the cup to Queen's Park had to be decided by an SFA Committee which was chaired by the President of the SFA who was also connected to Queen's Park.

The matter was not clear-cut and there was alot of support for organising another game. This was shown in the narrowness of the final vote: 7-6 in favour of awarding the cup to Queen's Park.

When the replay ended 1-1, the initial assumption was the extra time would be played. However, the competition rules stated that this would only be played after the 2nd replay.

When it became clear to the spectators that extra time would not be played, and fuelled by rumours that the results were manipulated to increase ticket revenue, the crowd invaded the pitch.

In the ensuing disorder, the goalposts were torn down, parts of the pitch were ripped up and the wooden pay-boxes set alight. Mounted police and the fire brigade also came under attack and in total there were over 100 injuries.

Both clubs requested for Scottish FA not to reschedule a 2nd replay and, subsequently, the trophy and medals were withheld.

Queen's Park FC, the owners of Hampden Park, were paid £500 (approx. £41,000 today) in compensation by the SFA who ordered both clubs to pay and additiional £150 (approx. £12,500 today) each.
